In the past year, a supergroup has gained prominence in Spokane. Featuring some of the area's finest musicians from a huge variety of backgrounds (blues, folk, rock, funk, jazz, and hip-hop, to name a few), this conglomeration is known as Flying Spiders. Isamu Jordan, a writer, rapper, and advocate for local music, lays down his thought-provoking, witty, positive, and enlightened spoken-word lyrics, accompanied by MJ's beat-boxing and Nobe's free-style rapping. These front men are backed up by a tight instrumental arrangement that serves as live version of the samples, loops, and programmed rhythms present in classic hip-hop. The members in the photo below are part of the rotating cast of characters in this group, which may also include cello (Billy Mickelson), trombone (Brian Mueller), and some soulful guest singers (Jesi B and Jamal Ali) at live performances and on their new recordings. After a year of intense live gigs, they will soon unleash their first CD "The Doppelgänger EP: Villiaging Trilogy Pt. I" at ZOLA this Friday (11/11/11). To get the word out, Flying Spiders will perform live as a full band this Sunday on the 103.1 KCDA Local Lounge and let you preview some EP tracks.
