Rick Bocook, also known at Harpman Hatter, has been a fixture of the Spokane downtown for years. This Hillyard native decided to follow his passion of making music after finding himself without a home for a while. Wearing his trade mark top hat, he plays his collection of harmonicas for passers-by in the heart of Spokane, earning change from appreciative pedestrians. However, not everyone likes his presence. At times, certain store owners and the police feel that he's a nuisance and a source of loud noise, with his amplified harmonica. Instead of getting angry, he got educated. After studying the U.S. Constitution and local laws, he knows the rules and knows when his right of expression is being violated. Forming a loose-knit community with other street performers, he fights for the right to perform music in public and accept payment from anyone who digs his earthy, bluesy style. Harpman Hatter will share his music and stories on the Local Lounge this Bloomsday.
