From a barn at Anti-Squatch to the Sarnac rooftop and plenty of house shows in between, The Strangers' band name could very well be derived from the odd venues where they perform around Spokane. However, these gig locations are merely the result of a mostly under-21 band playing wherever they are allowed, on demand. Singer/guitarist Eric Kegley explains that they actually take their name from the ever-changing lineup of musicians in the group.
The Strangers' musical style is equally unconventional and eclectic: a progressive melding of indie rock, jazz, and some classical elements. The rhythm varies from a straight rock 4/4 to swing to compound time, all with frequent syncopation, kept in line by Char Smith's drumming. Catchy riffs alternate with chord progressions far more complex than those usually heard in the pop realm. Eric's casual crooning vocals tell stories that require repeated listenings to decipher. Isaac Grubb lends some Rhodes piano and Hammond organ sounds with both classical and jazzy inflections. Eric's guitar and Isaac's keyboard alternate between melodic lines and chords: both serve lead and accompaniment roles. With this heady mix of sound and huge dynamic changes, John Haven unites it all on the bass. At live shows, their young fanbase responds to the excitement with chants of "BONES!!!"...a tradition shrouded in mystery.
After about 2 ½ years of performing around Spokane, The Strangers just released their self-titled full-length album, recorded locally at Crabwalk Studios. Their CD release concert at the Luxe Ballroom in late August featured Lilac Linguistics and Sun Stripe as supporting acts. The Strangers will show the fruits of their labor on the 103.1 KCDA Local Lounge this Sunday, with CD tracks and songs performed live by the full band in our studio.
